Dancing

Last year, I found out that I like to dance. Not the kind of dancing that my sister used to do but I have found my niche and that niche is Spanish music. I have danced at various times throughout my lifetime but I have to admit that it has not been my favorite thing to do always. The fact that I have never had a natural rhythm or ability to easily pick up dance moves doesn't help either. I admire those people that can just watch and learn steps. I on the other hand have to practice, practice alot!
As my practice time, I have taken Friday's as my dancing nights. I enjoy dancing to Spanish music more than anything, particularly cumbias and rancheras. Yup, this L.A girl is a ranchera deep down inside. I always knew it, just never embraced it. I love the idea of sitting there waiting for a guy to spot me and ask me to dance. I guess it's the old fashion way of approaching a female that I like more. I get tired of the english clubs where you will be dancing with "the girls" then all of a sudden, some random dude is behind you trying to grind you! Don't get me wrong, I have backed it up a couple of times (yea, you can poke your eyes out now) but for the most part this type of dancing is not a turn on for me. I want to be asked to dance and I want to be able to choose who I dance with.
I first learned to dance in Mexico when I was about 15 years old. I used to go to the town dance hall and along with my step-sisters, we would dance up a storm. Then, there was the 80's era where I danced at house parties or get togethers. Those were always fun too! Once I got married, I stopped dancing with the exception of the occasional quinceanera, wedding or party. I was always shy about my dancing skills and usually preferred to just sit there. My ex-husband although has great rhythm, never liked to dance so it reinforced my non-dancing thoughts.
I am glad to be over my shyness and although I am not the best dancer out there, practicing and learning is the best part! I love my Friday "mexican hat dancing" days! If you ever go, I will be the one dancing all night!
